In a shocking revelation, AT&T disclosed that hackers had gained unauthorized access to customer call and text records for a six-month period, affecting nearly all of its cellular customers. The breach, which occurred between May 1, 2022, and Oct. 31, 2022, did not compromise sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers or birth dates. However, the compromised data included details of phone numbers that AT&T customers interacted with during the specified time frame.

AT&T, a major telecommunications company, discovered the illegal download in April and promptly alerted law enforcement authorities. The company has confirmed that at least one individual has been apprehended in connection with the breach. While the accessed data did not include the content of calls or texts, it did contain information about the telephone numbers that were contacted during the affected period.

The telecom giant assured customers that the compromised data is not believed to be publicly available at this time. AT&T has pledged to notify customers who were impacted by the breach through text, email, or U.S. mail. Additionally, affected individuals can access more information about the incident by visiting att.com/DataIncident.

This latest cybersecurity incident marks the second breach for AT&T in recent months, following a similar breach in March 2024. The company emphasized its commitment to working with law enforcement agencies to address the breach and has taken steps to close the unauthorized access point. AT&T reiterated its dedication to protecting customer data and providing resources to safeguard their information in the wake of this breach.
