China Mobile has taken the lead in Omdia's telco-to-techco benchmark, showcasing its prowess in transitioning towards the techco operator model. The study evaluated 12 telecom service providers globally as they shift towards offering technology services alongside communication services.

The telecom industry faces challenges like deploying costly 5G and fiber networks while seeing minimal revenue growth in traditional services. To adapt, many telcos are transforming into techcos, focusing on providing technology services to enterprises.

China Mobile secured the top spot in the benchmark with a score of 31 out of 40, highlighting its high-speed broadband platform, AI, big data, security capabilities, and a range of enterprise digital services. The company reported a significant increase in digital transformation revenue, showing its commitment to evolving its service offerings.

NTT followed closely in second place, excelling in software services and the enterprise market. SK Telecom, ranking third, unveiled plans to become a global AI company, introducing new AI services like an AI-based digital assistant.

Telefónica claimed the fourth spot, emphasizing its progress in cybersecurity and enterprise digital services through Telefónica Tech. AT&T, e&, and Vodafone tied for fifth place, each showcasing unique strengths and strategies in the techco transformation journey.

Overall, the telecom operators in the benchmark are making strides towards a software-based operating model and expanding their enterprise digital services. However, there is room for improvement in their focus on vertical markets, an area that requires further attention.

Omdia, a technology research and advisory group, conducted the benchmark study to provide insights for organizations navigating the evolving tech landscape. China Mobile's success in the telco-to-techco transformation sets a benchmark for others in the industry to follow suit and embrace digital innovation.
