From a new Australian charity, WheelEasy has a refreshing aim; to create better access to leisure activity for people with mobility needs , with their family and friends, and others whose quality of life depends on a better level of mobility. It's is an Access Information Website born from the experiences of husband-and-wife team Max Burt and Justine O'Brien. It's a one-stop shop to enable a more enjoyable and accessible life for wheelchair users, others with mobility issues, their families & their friends, as well as parents pushing prams. Most access info is on hundreds of different sites, or not even easily available. Too often, Max and Justine ended up making calls, on top of doing research on the net – often still arriving to find the day out spoilt by the inaccessible. They wanted to change this. So they created WheelEasy; a sort of TripAdvisor for everything to do with access to all sorts of places, like beaches, cinemas, and train stations. It’s for mobiles, so you can be spontaneous. And it’s geolocated so you can see what’s nearby. Questions like; How do I get on to that beach? Does it have a beach wheelchair? What’s the gradient like? How about accessible toilets or parking nearby? And restaurants or bars around there? Are there outside tables if you can't get in? How about rolling routes nearby? And transport links? Is there a train station nearby etc? become easy to answer when you have all the information to hand, with you on your phone, listed all in one place. With all that already published date pooled in one place on your phone, the aim to grow the site by creating a "community" of wheelies; empowering people to come together in one online community, to share their access knowledge. Useful because it’s from those who know.
