Nium aims to produce ammonia cheaper and cleaner than the Haber Bosch process. The Haber Bosch process is a two-step process that makes hydrogen by reacting methane with steam at high temperatures and pressure, then reacting the hydrogen with nitrogen at high temperature and pressure to create ammonia. Most of the energy consumption in this process is due to the creation of hydrogen. Still, every step requires significant energy due to the environmental conditions that must be maintained. Nium claims to have developed a new catalyst first theorized at Stanford that takes hydrogen and nitrogen as inputs and creates ammonia at low pressure and temperature, thereby significantly reducing the power consumption of the second step.
