ThorCon is a company that aims to produce clean, reliable, CO2-free electricity at 3 cents per kilowatt-hour — cheaper than coal. They claim that a ThorCon plant requires less of the planet’s resources than a coal plant.
According to their website, ThorCon generates energy cheaper than coal. Thermal coal is shipped and delivered at competitive prices; $80 per ton is as good as it gets for coal delivering thermal energy of 25 MJ/kg. A 1-GW coal plant operating at 90% capacity factor and 45% thermal efficiency requires 2,500, tons per year.
