TeachFX

TeachFX is a smartphone and web application that provides automated feedback to teachers on the dialogue that's happening in their classroom. Our app analyzes the audio feed from a classroom using a blend of proprietary machine learning technology alongside open source tools like LIUM for speaker diarization. Then the app provides the teacher with metrics on aspects of their pedagogy, such as how much of their class was lecture versus discussion, how well each student is participating, and whether unconscious biases may be surfacing in the classroom. We developed this product after speaking to over 250 teachers and principals and listening to what most gets in the way of providing great education to kids. One of the most common themes we heard was that teachers feel isolated in their classrooms and lack regular opportunities for professional development. K-12 schools in the U.S. spend over $18 billion a year on professional development (PD) for teachers -- in larger districts, that's around $18 thousand per teacher per year -- yet 71% of teachers report feeling dissatisfied with current solutions. TeachFX is a low-cost, high-impact form of professional development that meets the daily needs of teachers to improve student learning by honing their craft. Classroom dialogue is central to the facilitation of learning. TeachFX helps promote more meaningful and equitable classroom dialogue by superpowering teachers' work -- providing them with regular feedback on their practice by giving every teacher their own teaching assistant and instructional coach.
