Synapse Biomedical located in Oberlin OH about 30 miles west of Cleveland was established in 2002. NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System first received FDA approval for use in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) patients. Dr Ray Onders, co-founder and developer of the technology recognized the benefits for ALS patients. In 2011, the FDA approved, under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) the use of the NeuRx DPS in ALS patients with chronic hypoventilation. To-date, over 1200 ALS and SCI patients have been successfully implanted and the DPS is used in 24 countries.
