Summer Stars Camp for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization devoted to providing economically disadvantaged children, ages 12 -15, with an opportunity to discover themselves and their potential through the arts. We understand that through risk-taking and the hard work of artistic commitment, children develop essential character and life skills: confidence, creativity, problem solving, leadership and team building. These skills will lead these children down any path in life they dream to pursue.
We serve economically disadvantaged students, primarily from urban settings. In many cases, they have never spent time out of the city, have never experienced a camp setting, and have never been part of a comprehensive program that speaks to their passions.
The Arts are taught less and less each year as funding is cut from public school programs. But we’ve learned how important the arts are. Performing arts help kids learn to make their own choices, and own them. They develop essential character and life skills: confidence, creativity, problem solving, leadership and team building.
By meeting other kids with the same interests, by working with a caring staff that holds them to the highest standards, they learn that working hard makes it possible for them to get places they never thought possible.
They take these standards, this work ethic, and a renewed sense of self-worth into all facets of their lives.
