Americans produce more than 225 million tons of municipal waste each year; if converted into electricity though clean-burning waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, this trash would save 14 billion gallons of fuel oil. In addition to creating a renewable energy source that would all but eliminate our dependency on foreign oil as a heating source, WTE plants also divert refuse that would otherwise end up in landfills around the nation. Additionally, because WTE plants burn cleanly, they typically are located in or near major metropolitan centers, eliminating costly and inefficient long-distance electrical transmission.

RoBran Industries, Inc. (“the Company”) is a Waterbury, Connecticut-based clean energy company founded to take advantage of readily available technologies to create renewable energy from several sources of waste. RoBran Industries will build a flagship WTE plant in the Northeast, which will help solve multiple market needs in its area of operations. For instance, the municipal solid waste (MSW) created by communities has become subject to ever-higher tipping fees, placing a strain on the economic feasibility of land filling. Landfills too are overburdened by the continuous stream of MSW created each year. Previous efforts to partially recycle MSW has not been on a meaningful level, and incineration of MSW has numerous environmental and health issues.

Bio-energy systems (gasification systems) have attempted to fill the middle ground for MSW and other waste streams, but they suffer from problems associated with fuel diversity, size, emissions, and technology. All of this has been compounded by the increasing cost of electric power, electrical grid limitations, and the increasing volatility of traditional fuel sources. RoBran Industries will build and operate a state-of-the-art WTE plant at a site identified in Louisa, Virginia. The plant will be combined with a particle board manufacturing facility that will make use of the MSW, construction and demolition (C&D), and other waste materials readily available from nearby sources.
