Pohjoismaisen yhteistyön tavoitteena on yhtäältä lisätä Pohjoismaissa asumisen, työskentelyn ja yrittämisen houkuttelevuutta, toisaalta vahvistaa Pohjoismaita kansainvälisesti. Käytännössä tämä tapahtuu tekemällä yhteistyötä lukuisilla alueilla, kuten tutkimus-, ympäristö-, hyvinvointi- ja kulttuurialalla.
