PowerFone began with the acquisition and formation of Specialized Mobile Radio(SMR) operations in Detroit and the Midwest and then consolidated companies with SMR frequency assets to build mobile communications networks in Midwestern metropolitan areas. The company was acquired by Nextel in April, 1994 (Nasdaq: NXTL).
