Neuro Kinetics, Inc. (NKI) is the leader in integrating neurologic/ oculomotor stimuli with its precision I-Portal® eye tracking technology. Over 200 different diseases have been shown to manifest with abnormal eye movements. It is difficult for humans to detect these abnormalities as we see at, i.e. our brains process images at, ~30 frames per second, the refresh rate of ones monitor. The brain however moves the eye much more quickly, up to 800 degrees acceleration! NKI's I-Portal® captures the reflex of the eye at over 100 frames over second and uses novel sophisticated algorithms to accurately track the position of and changes of the pupil. NKI was one the pioneers in developing devices to diagnosing vertigo, dizziness, balance problems. Recently, NKI has focused on expanding its clinical utility conducting promising clinical studies. The results of these studies show great promise for the use of NKI's I-Portal® technology to objectively aid the detection and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy and concussions or mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). The I-Portal® platform is the science to see more. I-Portal can detect and monitor disease where current tools fail. Because the technology is non-invasive and has shown exceptional sensitivity, diseases can be found earlier and at lower cost. In a healthcare world trending toward outcomes I-Portal expects to play a vital role in healthcare management. Some Statistics - Balance/ Concussions/ Diabetic Retinopathy: - 90 million Americans go to health care providers because of vertigo, dizziness or balance problems. It is the second most common complaint heard in doctor's offices, and will occur in 70% of the nation's population at sometime in their lives. - Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among people over 65 and account for 50% of accidental deaths in the elderly, and 10% of falls result in hospitalization. - Children with balance disorders are often prevented from normal childhood activities. - Less than 10% of patients with balance and vestibular disorders are ever evaluated by a specialist. More than 70% are evaluated and treated by their primary care physicians. - Estimates for Americans sustaining a concussion or head trauma (mTBI) range from 1.6 to 2.5 million per year. - An estimated 5.3 million Americans are permanently disabled as a result of a TBI — nearly 2 percent of the population. - Over 200,000 or an estimated 20 percent of U.S. soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq have mTBI. - An estimated 300,000 Americans receive sports-related concussions annually. - Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20–74 years. - In 2005-2008, 4.2 million (28.5%) people with diabetes aged 40 years or older had diabetic retinopathy, and of these, almost 0.7 million (4.4% of those with diabetes) had advanced diabetic retinopathy that could lead to severe vision loss.
