Motus Innovations started out as the dream of founder and now CEO, Ross Ward. Having witnessed first hand, the debilitating effects of stroke, it is a cause that he is deeply passionate about.
As the biggest cause of adult disability in the UK, stroke can have a huge physical and psychological impact, both on stroke survivors, and their families.
Despite it's prevalence (with 152,000 people suffering a stroke every year in the UK), and the terrible effects of stroke disability, an enormous number (more than 60%) do not recover fully. This can have serious life long implications.
77% of stroke sufferers have upper limb disability. We use our hands for everything. Imagine the constant pain of not being able to use the bathroom, prepare dinner, even make a cup of tea, with out relying on family, friends or carers.
Ross turned to rehabilitation aides and robotic assistive devices as a solution, but with many systems costing tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds, it was clear that few stroke sufferers could access this highly beneficial technology. Something had to be done to give people access to these benefits and put them back in control of their own rehabilitation.
Ross began developing a solution whilst studying Medical Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London. The following year, Motus Innovations was founded to continue his work in developing the next generation of rehabilitation aides, applying the principles of robotic rehabilitation and neuroplasticity, focussing on key functional requirements.
The result? A device that supports patients throughout the full rehabilitation process, assisting them perform key functional movements of the upper limb, whist remaining easy to use, lightweight and affordable.
Right now, we are in the process of developing this technology, which we believe will make robotic rehabilitation more accessible and cost effective.
