МСЭ является ведущим учреждением Организации Объединенных Наций в области информационно-коммуникационных технологий, которое задает направление инновациям в сфере ИКТ вместе со своими 193 Государствами-Членами и членами, представляющими более 700 объединений частного сектора и академические учреждения. МСЭ, созданный в 1865 году, отмечает в 2015 году свою 150-ю годовщину как межправительственный орган, отвечающий за координацию на глобальной основе совместного использования радиочастотного спектра, содействие международному сотрудничеству при распределении орбитальных позиций для спутников, совершенствование инфраструктуры электросвязи в развивающихся странах и создание всемирных стандартов, которые обеспечивают беспрепятственное взаимодействие широкого диапазона систем связи. От широкополосных сетей до новейших беспроводных технологий, воздушной и морской навигации, радиоастрономии, океанографии и мониторинга Земли с использованием спутников, а также конвергенции фиксированной и мобильной телефонной связи, интернета и технологий радиовещания − все это свидетельствует о том, что МСЭ верен идее соединить мир.
