Hippocampus Learning Centres provide pre-school and after-school educational services for children in rural India. Through fun and interactive methods, children learn concepts that will help them to do better in school. Each centre is run by local women, providing local employment opportunities, who are carefully selected and trained. Our teachers care deeply about the welfare and education for the children of her village.
Surveys paint a grim picture of the quality of education in rural India. Almost 90% of children in India do not have access to kindergarten. School enrollments are almost universal in the primary schools but due to the poor quality of education, many children drop out. Only 45% reach the 10th grade and only 60% of children in rural India pass. The education system is failing our children and, as a result, in the long term they will likely remain marginalized without further schooling or employment opportunities.
We began with 8 teachers in 8 villages in 2010 and in 3 years have reached 103 villages (2013) offering both Kindergarten and after school programs in English and Math. Our focus currently is in Mandya and Davangere Districts giving us deeper penetration into these districts therefore having a greater impact in the long run!
