In a day with instantaneous streams of data and communications, we have more computational power in the palm of our hand than they had to land the first astronauts on the moon. While many of the technological advancements have been for our comfort and increased the quality of life, others have saved lives through medical diagnostics and better treatment options. It is my life goal to carry on the traditions of my family legacy which has been in the business of maintaining and caring for medical laboratory equipment for the past thirty years. Laboratory equipment is responsible for the tests that doctors and scientists use to determine both forensic and diagnostic conclusions to the identification and subsequent treatment options various diseases from samples ranging from a simple throat swab to a complex biopsy. While there have been exciting advancements in DNA sequencers and Mass Spectrometers, the overwhelming majority of legacy equipment found in even the most prestigious laboratories today has not had a major technological advancement since the early 1990’s. This standard equipment has been grossly overlooked in coming of age design and the use of analytics in these costly and tired pieces of equipment. Over ninety percent of a sample’s life is spent in a passive instrument known as an incubator. Currently, these aged instruments utilize analog dials with no method of changing the setpoint without physically touching the unit or receiving a notification on any performance differentials even when the device totally malfunctions. In an era of home automation and smart devices, even our washers and dryers have analytic detail and can be found on ordinary everyday inert devices. At Hardin Scientific, we noticed the medical device market and specifically the medical laboratory market, lacked IoT, automation, and analytics. These systems and functions would not just make life easier for the industry, it would reduce expenses and increase productivity, and most importantly, create analytics that is more accurate for critical care diagnostics.
