GutCheck was conceived in late 2009 at a breakfast between Matt Warta and good friend Carl Russow from iModerate. They discussed how qualitative market research was a slow and labor intensive process that hadn’t evolved significantly in the last 50 years. The idea: What if they could change qualitative market research in a similar way that Survey Monkey was transforming quantitative research? Using agile thinking and lean startup principles borrowed from the software industry, they set out to change the landscape of market research. The company launched in spring 2011 at DEMO, winning the $1 million top prize.
Over the next several years, the brand evolved considerably, launching iteration after iteration of online qualitative research tools. The solution changed considerably, but the central purpose was the same: deliver qualitative research in faster timelines for less money. Throughout the process, the company constantly listened to the market and evolved the solution to better suit client needs. The commitment to evolution has resulted in almost 4,000 percent company growth since 2011.
The GutCheck solution of today is not what Matt and Carl started with. The DIY solution turned into a full-service, multi-language, cloud-based solution being used regularly by global leading companies like PepsiCo, Google, Chipotle, and Nestlé.
