The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the regulatory structure of Ministry of health and family welfare. It is responsible for handling food related issues and maintaining the safety and quality of food items for the benefit of consumers.

FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
