Freepoint Commodities is a merchant of physical commodities and a financer of upper- and mid-stream commodity-producing assets. In addition, the company provides physical supply services and related structured solutions for counterparties. The company was founded in 2011 by Trident V and a senior management team that previously led Sempra Energy Trading Corporation and its successor company from 1998 until 2009. Stone Point facilitated an introduction to a Trident fund limited partner that invested equity alongside Freepoint in an acquisition of a midstream pipeline. Stone Point’s relationships with investors have helped Freepoint secure investors for its merchant banking deals. Stone Point helped Freepoint evaluate a number of strategic acquisitions. In addition, Stone Point helped the company acquire a proprietary trading system. Stone Point provided additional equity capital to expand Freepoint’s product line and geographic presence. Stone Point provided significant assistance in recruiting several top traders and assisted the founders in developing an incentive program for key management. Stone Point provided bridge financing to support a large acquisition, and helped to negotiate the initial line of credit. Stone Point provided significant assistance with the build-out of Freepoint’s infrastructure, including helping to identify office space, developing an operating budget, and selecting technology and other vendors.
