CCWood was founded in 2014 based on developed technology for wood flour treatment enabling enhanced properties for WPC (wood polymer composite) products. In WPC, wood flour, the finely ground wood leftovers from the logging industry are combined with polymers to cost-effectively create durable composite materials with specific properties. These are mainly fossil-based, but are increasingly of renewable origin. WPC replaces tropical hard wood in decking for terraces and cladding for houses, and is a sustainable long term sink for CO2. CCWood has developed the solution for wood flour decay, lengthening the lifetime of WPC to at least 50 years in comparison with the current 15-20 years. Wood flour decay is mainly caused by water absorption. The CCWood technology has been shown to effectively make wood flour hydrophobic (water repellent). • The technology is a combination of among others acetylation and a temperature trajectory, taking place at ambient pressure • Wood flour becomes hydrophobic like the olefins (polymers), and as a results CCWood process achieves an intimate binding of wood particles with the olefin matrix • This means that less compatibility agent is needed reducing the WPC cost price • Test programs and piloting demonstrated the efficacy of the CCWood process • The CCWood process achieved strongly reduced water absorption in comparison with standard wood flour CCWood technology has proven to take away the disadvantages of wood, allowing for increasing wood content in composites at the expense of fossil polymers. This allows the WPC to become more environmentally sustainable, more durable and more cost-effective.
