Afval loont offers innovative solutions for the circular economy. Afval Loont involve citizens to become more involved and aware of the value of waste. Afval loont rewards citizens by paying per kilogram of separately collected waste.
The reusable waste is not burned but actually recycled. With these funds, citizens can donate to local organizations such as such as schools, community centers or save for their own families. Jørgen van Rijn founded the company in 2011 to create awareness that waste is actually a resource and therefore is valuable, thus creating a fundamental shift in attitude and behavior.
Afval loont has collectively avoided over 2.5 million KG of CO2 emissions in 2016 and increased the local recycling percentage by 40%. In addition, Afval loont employs people with a distance to the labor market.
Social Impact Ventures led the last investment round in which recycling giant Van Gansewinkel and circular consulting bureau Rebel Group participated, as well as founder Jørgen van Rijn. Social IV took a significant minority stake and provides capital for the accelerated growth of Afval loont in combination with active venture assistance.
