The name Billion comes from a philosophy of wanting to create a crowdfunding platform aimed at solving global issues that impact a billion people. The number itself is not that important as much as the idea of solving BIG problems by touching the greatest amount of people possible.

Billion is built around a new crowdfunding concept called "competitive crowdfunding." What this means is that once individuals, or small teams of individuals, around the world pitch their movements on the site, those movements will be funneled into a tournament style bracket. Pairs of movements will compete for "votes" (1 vote = $1) and through each week, movements with the most votes will move on. The losing movements have their money reallocated to a winning movement of the donator's choice. Eventually, all the money in the bracket waterfalls into the center, funding one massive, world-changing movement, to save the world.

This process is to ensure the involvement of the global community in choosing the best possible movement that will impact the most people.

Once the tournament phase is over the chosen Billion movement is the single movement featured on the site to be crowdfunded in the typical manner.
