BariaTek Medical, founded by Truffle Capital, is dedicated to addressing obesity via minimally invasive endoscopic approaches. Obesity is one of the most debilitating pandemics affecting humanity: 39% of all adults, more than 1.9 billion people, were overweight in 2016 and of these more than 650 million suffer from obesity, according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that there are more than 700 million people suffering from obesity today. People suffering from obesity tend to lead shorter, less healthy, lives. Treating overweight-related conditions (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and others) is projected to cost G-20 nations on average 8.7% of their health budgets over the next three decades which is estimated by the United Nations to exceed $ 1.3 Trillion per year by this decade. Surgery works, it is the most effective approach to weight loss but it suffers from a low adoption rate due to safety issues, procedural complexity, and patient aversion. BariaTek is dedicated to developing a minimally invasive endoscopic approach that will match the efficacy of surgery and surpass it in terms of safety and ease of use.
