Atrevida Science is a CleanTech wind energy startup bringing pioneering research from the University at Buffalo to life. Our mission is to use innovative design and material concepts to improve wind energy conversion at the most critical point –the turbine blade. Scientists, researchers, and industry experts have long known that wind turbine performance is significantly affected by blade design and the current wind turbine fleet is using outdated, sub optimal shapes. Atrevida’s technology, known as an “Actively Morphing Blade”™ (AMB™), adjusts the blade shape to the optimal configuration based on wind speed. As the wind velocity shifts, the profile of the blade automatically adjusts (morphs). This means improved efficiency, (think MORE electricity) over a wider range of wind speeds without making the blade longer. It also means better stability and lower tower loads, meaning lower installation and life-cycle costs. This is especially important as the global wind market moves to off-shore towers which face installation challenges that can be managed better with shorter, lighter blades.
