Dr. Dan Jacobs, a Silicon Valley-based plastic surgeon, came up with the concept of the AeroForm while riding a bike. He was thinking about his breast reconstruction patients. They had to endure very painful saline injections with tissue expanders. He began to wonder if there could be another way. Being on a bike, he carried a small canister of compressed gas to repair flat tires. That canister inspired Dr. Jacobs with the idea of using a similar canister for expansion. His idea was to place one inside of a tissue expander, allowing the woman to self-expand slowly. He believed this simple innovation could make the tissue expansion process easier and more comfortable for his breast reconstruction patients. With this seed of an idea and his Silicon Valley contacts, AeroForm was born.
