Accessing knowledge in any language
Aikuma is an app for crowdsourcing spoken translations in any language. The majority of the world's languages ? approximately 6,400 of the 7,000 extant languages ? are effectively unwritten. This includes languages with tens of millions of speakers such as Oromo (Ethiopia). Cultural and scientific knowledge passed down by word of mouth over many generations needs to be safeguarded by being recorded and translated into major world languages. Additionally, information about health and development needs to be translated into these oral languages in service to the universal human right to seek and receive information and ideas (Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). Aikuma addresses this challenge, making it easy to record, translate, and share knowledge between members of rural indigenous communities, city-dwelling diasporas, and speakers of the world's most well-resourced languages.
