Africa Exchange Holdings, Ltd. (AFEX) is a holding company established by Berggruen Holdings, Heirs Holdings, and 50 Ventures, to establish equity and commodity markets across East and West Africa. Its goal is to create better access to agricultural and financial markets for smallholder farmers, enabling them to sell their products at fair and competitive prices and gain access to financing opportunities.
AFEX established the first node of the regional East Africa Exchange in 2013 in Rwanda, and seeks to begin operations in West Africa with a base in Nigeria, and expand throughout the East Africa region. Through its operations, AFEX aims to:
- Increase liquidity in commodity markets and enhance price discovery
- Improve existing value chains by linking production to high value markets
- Increase access to capital in agriculture by de-risking lending to the sector
- Increase farmers' bargaining power and share of created value
- Ensure integrity of trade and reduce default risk
