The 12th World Peace Forum, held in Beijing, served as a platform for global leaders, former dignitaries, and experts to convene and deliberate on the pressing need for unity and cooperation in the face of escalating challenges on the international stage. The theme of "Improving Global Security Governance: Justice, Unity, and Cooperation" set the tone for discussions that aimed to find common ground, promote cooperation, restore stability in the international order, and safeguard world peace amidst the backdrop of de-globalization.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng delivered a keynote speech at the forum, urging countries to come together to enhance global security governance, uphold fairness and justice, and foster international security cooperation. Against the backdrop of profound global changes unseen in a century, Han emphasized China's commitment to staying on the right course in a rapidly evolving world. He put forward three key proposals: advocating for peaceful coexistence, common security, and openness and inclusiveness as guiding principles for global peace and stability.

Highlighting China's longstanding dedication to peace, Han underscored the nation's role as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order. He expressed hope that all participants would engage in open dialogue, build consensus, and contribute their insights and efforts towards enhancing global security governance.

The forum also featured discussions on the role of middle powers in preserving world peace, the importance of equity and justice, major power responsibility for peace and security, and the crucial role of the Global South in maintaining peace on a global scale. Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama emphasized Japan's potential to act as a bridge between the U.S. and China, advocating for sustained dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.

Reflecting China's vision of building a global community of shared future, Hatoyama proposed the establishment of an East Asian community based on mutual respect, understanding, and assistance. He called on countries in the region to set up mechanisms for dialogue and consensus-building, despite differences in values and systems, to promote peace and stability.

Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin addressed the significant historical transition and unprecedented threats facing the world today, highlighting the "double threat of escalation and deconstruction." He warned against the perils of de-globalization and technological disruption, stressing the importance of adhering to the principles of the U.N. and promoting peaceful coexistence rooted in common humanity.

De Villepin concluded by emphasizing the need to reform the U.N. to restore its full legitimacy and effectiveness, advocating for respectful and efficient multilateralism to create a better world for all. The forum, comprising four major plenary sessions and 18 panel discussions, provided a comprehensive platform for global strategic security experts to exchange ideas, promote international security cooperation, and work towards a shared future of peace and stability.

Founded in 2012, the World Peace Forum has emerged as a key annual event for addressing international security challenges, organized by Tsinghua University in collaboration with the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. The 12th edition of the forum underscored the imperative of unity and cooperation in navigating the complexities of the contemporary global landscape, urging countries to come together for the collective pursuit of peace and security.
