General Motors demonstrated the ability to power an entire household from a fully charged Chevy Silverado electric pickup truck. The presentation took place in a mansion in Beverly Hills, where electricity was intentionally shut off.
Within 20 seconds of the power outage, the five-bedroom house was illuminated again. The home system consumed only 5 kW or less from the Chevy Silverado parked in the garage.
GM highlighted that the mansion could operate for three to four days at this consumption level before the battery fully discharged. During the presentation, the Silverado's charge decreased by only 1%.
Prior to the event, GM Energy installed a bidirectional charging device called GM Energy PowerShift Charger, along with their V2H Enablement kit, which includes an inverter, home hub with load management systems, and a backup battery. This kit costs $12,699.
The 900+ square meter mansion ran solely on the 215 kWh Ultium battery of the Silverado for several hours. The battery powered over 50 lamps, kitchen equipment where chefs prepared snacks for guests, and also supported music playback and outdoor lighting on the 60-meter driveway.
"If you install one of these GM Home systems in every customer's home, you can create a decentralized network," noted William Hochkiss, GM's head of supplier quality, procurement, and supply chain security.
GM launched GM Energy in 2022 to compete in the growing home energy market and plans to sell additional equipment, including portable and stationary home charging systems.
The company also announced plans to implement bidirectional charging in 2025 for GMC Sierra EV Denali, Chevy Equinox, Blazer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq. These vehicles will receive this capability through wireless updates or dealer-installed upgrades.
While similar to features offered on the Ford F-150 Lightning, GM aims to make it more mainstream. The goal is to convert the entire electric vehicle lineup to provide V2H capabilities, although third-party access is not planned at launch.
For instance, the GM Home kit is currently incompatible with other electric vehicles, including the Honda Prologue, which also uses a GM Ultium battery. Compatibility expansion is not planned until new ISO standards are released.
A recent JD Power study showed that over a third of electric vehicle owners are interested in bidirectional charging.
In 2023, General Motors announced a partnership with Tesla, allowing new GM electric vehicle models to connect to Tesla's Supercharger network.
