ALO7 Online Tutoring is an online tutoring platform that connects young Chinese students learning English with English tutors around the world, and offers fun, interactive classes that include a balance of education and play. Our tutors are native English speakers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Our students are from China, and range from 3 to 15 years old. ALO7 works with partner schools in China, whose students have their English lessons at their school during the day, and then they have the opportunity to have an online review session with one of our tutors from their home. All tutoring sessions are a review of what the students have learned at school. ALO7 provides all lessons and lesson plans to its tutors. For many of our programs, we use an interactive courseware application that features lots of color, sounds, animations, and games. It’s both easy to use for our tutors, and fun for our students during their lessons. About the Online Tutoring Position – This is a part-time, independent contractor position. Our tutors have the potential to fill up their schedule through our platform; however, no amount of hours are guaranteed – the booking experience varies from tutor to tutor. -Class Set-up: The tutor and the students communicate via video call. The students are able to see the tutor’s computer screen as the tutor takes them through the lesson. -Expectations for Classes: Each tutor is expected to have a bright, tidy, quiet workspace to teach from, and is expected to have a professional appearance. They must also meet our technical requirements (detailed here: https://tutor.alo7.com/ALO7_recruitment/tech_reqs) which include having a computer or laptop with a camera, having a headset, and having a steady, quick Internet connection. Teaching tips and guidance are provided for our tutors from our trainers and our Academic Support Team. -Class Types: Classes will most often be with 1, 2, or 3 students, who meet with their tutor online from their homes. Some programs will have classes with 4, 5, or 6 students, who are also each in their homes. Some programs will have classes with a group of students who are all in a classroom – these are called our “1 to Many” classes. Each class is typically 25 minutes long, but we also have some 50-minute classes. For classes with more than 3 students, tutors will be provided with training beforehand in order to prepare them for these class types. -Scheduling: Our peak tutoring hours (when the largest amount of classes are scheduled) are every day from 6-9pm China time. This is when our partner schools are most likely to book classes for their students with our tutors. For those in North America, the peak hours are in the early morning. For those in Europe, the peak hours are in the afternoon. For those in Asia, the peak hours are in the evening. If a tutor has full availability during the peak hours, they have the potential to work 3 hours a day, 7 days a week. But again, no amount of hours are guaranteed. Our partner schools often book recurring classes, which occur at the same day/time from week to week and month to month, with the same tutor and the same students. These recurring classes typically last between 20 and 40 weeks. This allows our tutors to see consistency in their schedules from week to week. Tutors are typically booked for classes based upon their credentials and qualifications, including their teaching/tutoring experience, their experience working with children, their experience working with non-native English speakers, and possibly where they’re from (some schools may be looking for tutors with a specific accent). -Compensation/Opportunities: The standard rate of pay for all tutors is $15 USD per hour, or $7.50 USD per 25-minute class. There are opportunities for tutors to make more than this; for example, if they teach some of our programs, like the 1-to-Many programs, that offer a higher rate of pay, or if they teach a certain number of group classes per month. Some of our top tutors are offered additional opportunities to do recruiting, training, writing, curriculum development, etc. These tutors will typically be able to make their own schedule for these opportunities. -Qualifications: To begin the recruitment process, a candidate must be a native English speaker who grew up in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand. They must also have a clear, easily understandable accent. We do not accept non-native English speakers as applicants. We do not accept applicants who grew up somewhere other than one of these countries. We do not accept applicants who moved to one of these countries as an adult. A candidate must meet one of the following educational criteria: has completed a Bachelor’s degree program; is currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program; or has completed an Associate’s degree program as well as an English teaching certification program (TEFL, TESOL, CELTA). We do not accept candidates who do not meet one of these criteria. We do not specifically require tutors to have teaching/tutoring experience, experience working with children, or experience working with non-native English speakers, but these kinds of experiences may help a tutor to be booked for more classes. If possible, we recommend potential candidates to gain these types of experiences before applying. About the Recruitment Process – -Application: Applicants will first fill out an online application. They will visit the recruitment site (https://tutor.alo7.com/ALO7_recruitment) and create a recruitment account, and then they will be able to fill out and submit their application. We ask our applicants to submit a resume, a cover letter, and an audio recording of their voice. The recording can be brief (around 1 minute), and is used for our recruitment team to get a sense of the applicant’s personality and speaking style, so they can introduce themselves, discuss their interest in the position and their related experiences, etc. We would like applicants to provide as much detail as possible about their educational background and where they grew up, so that we can determine if they possess the initial qualifications we are looking for. -Interview: If an applicant’s application is approved, they will move on to the interview stage. The interview is a 30-minute meeting with the candidate and one of our recruiters. The recruiter will get to know the candidate and will provide them with more information about the position and the company. All of our recruiters are current tutors, so the candidate will have the opportunity to ask their recruiter any questions they have about the position or the experience of being an ALO7 tutor. -Experience/Training: If a candidate passes the interview stage, they will complete some training, which includes watching some of our YouTube videos and taking a short test. We also ask the candidates to submit a written introduction, a profile picture, and a 30-second video, that will make up their tutor profile. Lastly, we ask the candidate to create a WeChat account (we use WeChat, a mobile messaging app, to communicate with our tutors) and to submit their WeChat ID on the recruitment site. -Mock Class: Once the training steps are completed, the candidate will be able to prepare for and schedule a mock class. The candidate will have access to sample lessons that they will demo. They will work one-on-one with one of our recruiters, who will pretend to be a student, or multiple students (the candidate will use multiple names to direct questions/instructions to each “student”). The candidate will be evaluated on their classroom set-up and their preparation; their time management; their level of energy and ability to make the session fun, engaging, and encouraging (including using props and big gestures); their techniques for working with young learners of English (simple language, concept checking, corrections); their ability to facilitate beneficial language practice (giving the “students” lots of time to speak and encouraging the formation of full sentences); and their interaction with the “students” (good rapport building, making the “students” feel comfortable, chitchatting with the “students” about themselves). -Documentation: If a candidate passes their mock class, they will move on to the documentation stage of the process. They will be asked to upload a copy of the diploma for their highest degree or a copy of their student ID card if they’re a current student; a copy of a form of official identification (passport, driver’s license, etc.); and a signed contract. They will also have the option to upload any teaching certifications they hold. -On Board: Once a candidate’s documents have been processed, they will be brought on board as a new tutor. They will be able to download all the lesson materials and complete a readiness check on the recruitment site that will help them to prepare to begin teaching.
